Thomas William Miller, 81 of Teutopolis, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, August 1, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 5, 2013 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis. Burial will take place in St. Francis Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday evening at the church with a combined parish wake service and Knights of Columbus rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Teutopolis American Legion Post #924 or to the donor's choice.
Tom was born November 9, 1931 in Teutopolis, the son of John F. and Helen (Pals) Miller. He married Annie (Kinkelaar) and she survives. Tom grew up on the family dairy farm where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Teutopolis High School and decided to venture out into the world by going to college in Omaha, Nebraska. Tom wanted to work on the railroad so he learned telegraph and teletype. He joined the National Guard and during the Korean War, he was relocated to California where he was company clerk. Tom later purchased the family farm after his father's passing.
Tom was a lifetime member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis and was a third degree Knights of Columbus member and trustee. For 29 years, Tom served on the Effingham Equity board of directors and was president for 8 years. In 1960, he won the Illinois Council Young Farmers Award. Tom was also on the Teutopolis school board, serving as President in 1980. He was on the Teutopolis Fire Department board, a member of the men's sodality and a member of Mid America Dairy Association. Tom served twice as commander in the Teutopolis American Legion and was currently working as a driver with Black and Company.
Tom is survived by his wife, Annie; six sons, John (Lisa), Roch (Sandy), Richard (Dianne), Edward, Steve (Melody) and Frank (Laurie); four daughters, Jane (Greg) Ruholl, Karen Behrman, Vickie (Ronald) Bloemer and Nancy (Dennis) Probst; two brothers, Robert and Clarence (Charlotte); sister, Ruth Hardiek; 35 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren who love him and will miss him very much.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe; sister-in-law, JoAnn Miller and brother-in-law, Butch Hardiek.
