Sanford S."Sam" Field, 87, of Effingham, died at 4:23 a.m. Friday morning, July 27, 2012 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
As per his wishes, his remains will be cremated and his family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would like anyone interested to plant a tree, shrub, or flower in their yard to remind them of Sam. The family has also suggested that donations or memorials be made to the Crossroads Cancer Center in Effingham. Sam was born on January 20, 1925 in Dieterich, the son of Frank and Cleo C. (Mills) Field. He married the love of his life, Lucille Colclasure, on September 23, 1950 and she preceded him in death in September of 1989.
Sam proudly served his country as an officer in both World War II and the Korean War. After his service he worked for Norge/Fedders in Effingham for 37 years. He was also employed for several years with the State of Illinois.
Sam loved people and enjoyed serving and was honored to serve the people of Effingham for five terms as their city councilman. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham, the Effingham Knights of Columbus Council #665, Effingham American Legion Post #1016, and the Effingham Moose Lodge.He loved to garden and generally gave away more of his produce than he kept for himself. He also loved raising flowers with a special fondness for roses.
Survivors include sons: Sam (wife LuAnn) Field, Jr. of Effingham; Rodney (wife Joy) Field of Okeechobee, Florida; grandsons: Sanford Samuel Field, III of Effingham; Ryan R. (wife Shannan) Field of Austin, Texas; granddaughters: Kylee Nicole Field of Okeechobee, Florida; and a brother: William Field of Effingham.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers and six sisters.
