Robert E. Harris, 84 of Effingham, passed away at 10:40 a.m., Monday, March 11, 2013 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shumway with visitation beginning one hour prior to services. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery, Effingham at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or donor's choice. Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert was born April 25, 1928 in Yale, the son of Omer and Ruth (Hamilton) Harris. He married Shirley Ann (Larsen) and she preceded him in death. Robert then married Joyce (Kruger) Merkel on October 23, 1987 and she survives. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Shumway.

Robert is survived by wife, Joyce of Effingham; step-son, Chris (Donna) Merkel of Janesville and step-daughter-in-law, Emilie Merkel of Altamont; three step-grandchildren and five step-great-granchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; sister, Rosalie and step-son, Clinton Merkel.
