Obituary

Richard "Dick" Day, 83 of Effingham, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 23, 2016 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorials may be made to Rettsyndrome, in honor of his granddaughter, Carley Stephens, or to the Effingham & St. Anthony Sportsbackers.

Dick was born July 24, 1932 in Huntington, IN, the son of Gail and Myrtle (Metcalf) Day. He graduated from Huntington High School and later attended Ball State Teachers College. In 1955, he graduated with his Bachelor's Degree and his Master's Degree in 1958. Dick taught high school, then elementary grades and was a building principal. He moved to Illinois where he sold Century 21 franchises, real estate and insurance.

Dick married Mary Jane Stephens on July 17, 1983. They loved to travel, golf, and enjoyed spending time with their family. He was an active member of St. Anthony Parish, Effingham Country Club and the Effingham Elks Lodge #1016. Dick was a fourth degree member and faithful navigator of the Effingham Knights of Columbus Council #665.

Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of Effingham; son, Dr. J. Rick (Darra) Day of Scottsdale, AZ; daughter, Lynette Sue Day of Cave Creek, AZ; step-children, Terri (Dave) Gilbert of Shumway, Timothy (Julie) Stephens of Effingham, Anthony (Laura) Stephens of Effingham and Tisha (Matt) Schabbing of Effingham; 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sandra and her husband, Ed Meyer; his wife's parents, Agnes and Leo Reiss. Dick will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
