Raymond Gene Marshall, Sr., 81 of Effingham, devoted and loving husband and father, passed away at 8:29 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015 at H.S.H.S. St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Gene was born October 24, 1933 in Effingham, the son of Bernard R. and Lucille (Clark) Marshall. He grew up in Oblong and later attended Lockyear Business College in Evansville, IN. Gene served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Heidelberg, West Germany, from 1953 to 1957. He met and married wife, Katherine Decker, originally from New York State, while both were serving in the Army. Mr. Marshall retired from a 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1991. He was a cat and dog lover, and loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and the University of Illinois basketball and football teams. Gene was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham.
He will be missed by his wife, Katherine of Effingham; son, Raymond, Jr. of Cedar Rapids, IA; daughter, Judith of Carbondale; sister, Jan Nevrenchan of Lake St. Louis, MO; and two grandchildren, Eileen Marshall and Andrew Marshall, both of Iowa City, IA. Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
