Leon was born on September 7, 1935 in Jewett, Il, the son of Frances Alene (Greeson) (Barnes) Kenter and Seybert Otis Barnes. His step-father was Ferd Kenter whom he loved as his own father.

He worked for Jack Graham at Petty Printing and in his retirement worked as a Veterans Service Officer for the Effingham Veterans Assistance Office, a job he proudly held with an amazing staff who he considered his friends. He helped many Veterans get the assistance they deserved and was very well-respected by everyone who walked through his office.

Leon served in the United States Navy and was actively involved in many Veteran organizations. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was also a member of the DAV and 40 & 8. Leon was the club manager at Effingham VFW #1769, Illinois Jr. Vice Commander, Illinois State Commander, and Past Grand Knight of the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Teutopolis.

Leon is survived by his daughter, Kimberly McCormick of Manteno; son, Timothy (Rika) Barnes of Nagoya, Japan; grandsons, Connor McCormick, Carter McCormick, Dennis McCormick, and Kye Barnes. Leon was very proud of his children, particularly his grandsons.

Leon was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Juanita; his parents, Alene Kenter and Seybert Barnes; step-father, Ferd Kenter; brother, Terry and a granddaughter.

A special thank you to Kelsey Seeger and Bridget Grilli, RN and CNA, respectively of the Manteno Veterans Home whose care went above and beyond. Leon's family will be forever grateful for their love, care, and professionalism.
