Norbert J. "Jim" Buening, 95, of Effingham died at 4:35 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, at Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Effingham.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Sigel. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 9, at Bauer Funeral Home, Effingham, with a 6 p.m. parish prayer service followed immediately by a Knights of Columbus rosary. Memorials may be made to St. Michael the Archangel Church, Sigel.
Norbert was born Jan. 7, 1916, in Sigel, the son of Henry and Dora (Kettman) Buening. He married Virginia M. Hutmacher on June 3, 1944, and she preceded him in death in 2009.
Norbert was a retired partner of Buening Implement, Effingham. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Sigel, Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council 2874 and Effingham VFW Post 1769. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Norbert is survived by his two sons, Michael (LeAnn) of Teutopolis and Steve (Kathy) of Mason; daughter, Kay (Larry) Vahling of Teutopolis; son-in-law, Jim Althoff of Effingham; brother, Raymond Buening of Teutopolis; sister, Marie Schoenhoff of Teutopolis; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one daughter, Jane Althoff; five brothers, Joe, John "Jack," Henry, Albert and Walter; and two sisters, Annie Dallas and Madonna Kink.
