Obituary

LeRoy J. Will, 87 of rural Effingham, passed away at 5:05 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2015 at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2015 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Green Creek, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with a 6:30 p.m. parish prayer service. LeRoy was born November 6, 1927 in Lillyville, the son of John F. and Catherine M. (Holkenbrink) Will. He married Bertha M. Shabbing on August 16, 1952 and she preceded him in death on November 29, 2012. LeRoy was a member and former Trustee of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Holy Name Society and the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2874.

LeRoy was a 1946 graduate of Teutopolis High School. Upon graduation, he started working construction with his dad and uncle. In 1949, LeRoy was drafted into the United States Army where his high school band experience landed him a position as assistant manager of the Drum and Bugle Corp.

After his time in the service, LeRoy returned to Effingham and started working for Grunloh Construction. LeRoy and Bertha were avid dancers. In 1965, they took up square dancing; LeRoy called and taught lessons for many years. After retirement, LeRoy used his time and talents to teach 5th grade religion at St. Mary's, as well as working on many projects for friends and family.

LeRoy was a devoted husband and loving father. Together, he and Bertha adopted four children, Donna (Dick) Rhodes of Effingham, Carol Beccue of Fairfield, Mike (Cheryl) of Sigel and Mark (Andrea) of Effingham; seven grandchildren, Travis and Cortney Rhodes, Kristina (Sean) Vaughn, Dylan, Bryce and Ryan (Keisha) Beccue and Connor Will; five great-grandchildren also survive.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bertha; three brothers, Albert, Edwin and Victor; sisters, Isabel Hoelscher and Lucy Probst.
