Leo J. Martin, 96, of Effingham, passed into the arms of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday morning, September 9, 2011 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital, in the presence of his loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 12, 2011 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign at 2:30 p.m., Monday afternoon. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, September 11, 2011 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with a parish wake service at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church or Schools.
Leo was born on January 5, 1915 in Lockport, Illinois, the son of Michael P. and Mary (Haas) Martin. He graduated from Joliet High School and attended Coyne Institute in Chicago. Leo married Helen Einhorn on November 21, 1980 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham.
Leo worked for Texaco Oil Company and later formed Martin Bros. Appliances in Lockport and Manny & Martin TV in Champaign in 1952. Leo retired to Lake Sara in Effingham and served on various committees to preserve the lake. He was an avid University of Illinois fan, as well as the St. Louis Cardinals. Leo and Helen are long-time members of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. He was a very generous person and always willing to help family, friends, and neighbors with any project – no matter how messy the task. Leo will always be remembered to have a servant heart. Well done, good and faithful servant.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; children and step children, Jerry (Linda) Martin of Lakeland, Florida, Bill (Zan) Martin of Tampa, Florida, Tom (Venus) Martin of Mahomet, Mike (Mary) Martin of Champaign, James (Debbie) Einhorn of Effingham, Norma (Bob) Fisher of Effingham, Dr. Robert (Ruth) Einhorn of Olney, Tom (Myra) Einhorn of Effingham. Leo is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by wife, Audrey (Niner) Martin; son, Patrick; grandson, John; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Hemrich Martin; two brothers, Bill and Paddy Martin.
