Joyce E. Miller, 87, passed away at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016 at her home in Effingham.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2016 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham with entombment in Arborcrest Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the church and for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.
Joyce was born October 5, 1928 in Mattoon, the daughter of Fredrick G. and Alma (Furste) Homann. She married Lowell E. "Crow" Miller on September 3, 1950 in Mattoon and he preceded her in death in 1999. She and her husband were owners of Miller's Green Tree Farm and Arborcrest Memorial Park. They were previously co-owners of K&M Floral Shoppe in Effingham.
Joyce worked for a short time at Great Plains Hatchery in Effingham, the Social Service Bureau in Norfolk, VA and the Illinois Department of Public Aid in Effingham. She was a past president of the Effingham Jr. Woman's Club and the Charter President of the Zona Club of Effingham. Joyce was a member of the Illinois Cemetery and Funeral Home Association, Illinois Christmas Tree Growers, the Mid-America Christmas Tree Growers and the National Christmas Tree Growers Association.
Joyce graduated from Mattoon High School and later received her bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham, where she was a past member of the choir, director of the boy's choir and had taught Sunday School and Bible School. Joyce was also involved in the Altar Guild, Lydia Guild and was a Stephen Minister. She enjoyed volunteering at the Braille Center and at the welcome center of the Cross at the Crossroads.
Joyce is survived by her two sons, Randall (Tammie) of Effingham and Bradley (Tricia) of Ashmore; daughter, Laura (Howard) Janis of Effingham; eleven grandchildren, Monica, Landon, Nicholas, Heather, Samantha, Zachary, Michael, Jacob, Alex, Kaden and Elizabeth; eight great-grandchildren, Amelia, Jace, Jordan, Anthony, Skylynn, Alexis, Koby and Krue; two great-great-grandchildren, Russell and Layla.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Fred and Gerald "Jerry" Homann.
