John D. "Jack" Thies, 84, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9 at St. Johns Hospital, Springfield, Il. Funeral Mass will be held Monday Dec. 13, 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, Effingham, with Rev. Robert Spriggs officiating. Visitation will be Sunday Dec. 12 from 3:00 to 7:00 at Bauer funeral home with a wake service at 5:00. Burial will be in St. Anthony cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart School.
Jack was born February 9, 1926 in Effingham, IL, the son of Clarence and Myrtle (Stephens) Thies. He was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Parish, Effingham.
Jack and Margo Shay were married April 10 1948 at Sacred Heart Church by the late Rev. Gerald Wiegand. Margo preceded him in death Dec. 7, 2004.
After graduating from Effingham High School he served in the Navy during World War II. After the war he joined his parents in the grocery business at Thies Bros. Grocery in Effingham. He and Margo operated the store for 45 years.
In 1987 Jack was elected to the first of two terms as mayor of the City of Effingham. His tenure was marked by prosperity and growth for the city and contributed to his nomination and selection as Citizen of the Year in 2006.
In addition he was a past trustee of Sacred Heart Church, past director of Washington Savings Bank, past Exalted Ruler of the Elks, member Effingham noon Rotary Club, Effingham Country Club, Effingham Knights of Columbus, Effingham American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Effingham High School football statistician (35 Yrs), Sportsman's Club, Greater Effingham Chamber of Commerce, Civil Defense Patrol, Effingham Industrial Commission, an avid outdoorsman, Cubs and Bear fan.
Jack is survived by sons, Greg (Bilinda) Thies of Scottsdale Az.; Mark (Joan) Thies of Effingham; Doug (Karen) Thies of Owensboro Ky.; sisters, Jeanne (Bill) Huelsbusch, and Mary Ann Brooks, Effingham. Grandchildren, Elizabeth (Scott) McClelland, San Jose CA., Katharine Thies, London, England, John (Megan) Thies, Naperville; Timothy (Kimberly) Thies and Traci (Chad) Chojnicki, Effingham; Jaclyn Thies, Peoria; Nidia, Michael and Adam Thies, Owensboro, KY, and great grandchildren Anna and Taylor Thies, and Lucy Chojnicki, Effingham.
