Jim was born November 7, 1934 in Effingham, the son of William L. Broom, Sr. and Winifred (Norris) Broom. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Effingham, the Effingham Masonic Lodge, Shriners Club, Scottish Rite, as well as being the former president of Kiwanis Club.

Jim enjoyed his family business at W.S. Broom Furniture Company where he worked every day for 65 years. He delighted in the people he encountered; he never met a stranger. Jim loved to sing, whistle, laugh and to make people laugh from his jokes. Visiting lighthouses and fishing were among the things he enjoyed doing while traveling, as he spent the winters in Daytona. The "Big Bang Theory" and 007 movies were shows Jim liked to watch. Jim cherished spending time with his family and always tried his best.

Jim loved his family, which include his wife, Connie F. (Goeckner) (Mihlbachler) Broom of Effingham; Jim's three daughters, Jamie (Jim) Miller of Effingham, Sue (Arild) Hansen of Fredrickstadt, Norway and Jean (Kelly) Lockhart of Effingham; three step-children, Jeff (Penny) Mihlbachler, Angie (Phil) Lark and Rob (Michelle) Mihlbachler, all of Effingham. Jim was very proud of his six grandchildren, Ethan Miller, Gabby Miller, Emma-Marie Hansen, Karina Hansen, Aidan Lockhart and Quinten Lockhart and his four step-granchildren, Ryne, Molly and Katy Mihlbachler and Leighton Lark.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bill.
