Helen V. Wakefield, 98 of Effingham, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.

Funeral services will be held privately at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with burial in Oakridge Cemetery. Helen was born November 3, 1921 in Jasper County, the daughter of Charles A. and Orpha (Winterrowd) Scurlock. She married Edward Dexter Wakefield on December 25, 1949 and he preceded her in death in 1965.  Helen was the former owner of L & M Restaurant and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham.

Helen is survived by her son, Thomas E. (Kim) of Stewardson; daughters, Sandra L. (Dennis) Piccone of Murfreesboro, TN and Brenda K. (Dick) Evans of Effingham; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers, Omar and Noble Scurlock.
