Helen Frances Newsome, 97 of Shumway, passed away at 3:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 11, 2013 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with visitation being held for one hour prior to services. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. www.bauerfh.com

Helen was born on July 15, 1915 in Chicago, the daughter of Frank and Angela (Dobryn) Slecka. She married John O. Newsome in Chicago on November 21, 1936 and he preceded her in death on September 9, 1979. Helen was a licensed beautician, an avid pinochle player and loved to fish. She also enjoyed crocheting, cooking and telling stories.

Helen is survived by her sons, John R. (Helene) of Shumway and Terrence (Beverly) of Chicago; grandchildren, Jeanne (Tim) Wendt of Effingham, Julie (Brian) Burke of Naperville, John A. (Angie) of Effingham, Terry (Carrie) of Burr Ridge, James (Eillen) of Burr Ridge, Tom (Sandy) of Hendersonville, NV, Tim (Pam) of Little Elm, TX, Norman Jr. of Austin, TX, Joseph of Chicago and Emilie of Alton; seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; two brothers; five sisters; son, Norman and grandson, Patrick Newsome. Helen will be sadly missed.
