Harold F. "Shorty" Althoff, 76 of Effingham, passed away at 4:38 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lillyville, with burial in the church cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at the church with an 8:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Harold was born September 14, 1937 in Effingham, the son William and Cecilia (Swingler) Althoff. He married Norma J. Funneman on October 20, 1962 and she survives. Harold was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lillyville, Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2478 and Teutopolis American Legion Post #0924. He also served with the United States Army and was a dairy farmer for many years.

Harold is survived by his wife, Norma of Effingham; son, Tim Althoff of Effingham; two daughters, Tina (Randy) Clark of Effingham and Lee (Robert) Greuel of Sigel; siblings, Matilda (Clarence) Schmidt of Effingham, Esther (Herb) Worman of Dieterich and William Jr. (Mary) Althoff of Effingham; 5 grandchildren, Amber (Russ) Waldhoff, Michael Fletcher, Cody (Molly) Clark, Lauren Greuel and Josh Greuel; 3 great-grandchildren, Jayla, Zuri and Bryn Waldhoff.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Randy; three brothers, Walter, Albert and Carl; two sisters, Mary Ann Mette and Helen Althoff.
