Harold Lawrence Kaufman, 89, of Effingham, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Born on October 19, 1935, Harold lived a life rich in knowledge, love and adventure.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 29, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 30, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a local education foundation or charity of choice in Harold's memory.
Harold was married to the love of his life, Marian Bergfeld Kaufman, for 65 wonderful years. Together they built a beautiful life filled with exploration, family, and a shared passion for learning. Their journey took them across the globe, including a memorable period in Tehran, Iran, where Harold was honored with a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. He, Marian, and their son Steve embarked on that adventure together, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
A dedicated educator, Harold spent over 30 years teaching at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Illinois. He inspired generations of students in the areas of Logic, Philosophy, and English Language, leaving an indelible mark on the college community and the countless lives he touched through his thoughtful instruction.
Harold was a man of many interests. He found joy in woodworking, the quiet pursuit of mushroom hunting, and the thrill of travel. But above all, he cherished time spent with his beloved family.
Harold is survived by his devoted wife Marian; son, Steve Kaufman of Sarasota, Florida; and daughter Pam McGee of Bradenton, Florida. He was a proud grandfather to Sean Douglas McCain, Brianne Kaufman, Savannah McGee, and Samuel McGee. He was preceded in death by his daughter Susan Kaufman and son Brian Kaufman.
Harold lived a full and happy life - one defined by intellectual curiosity, deep compassion, and unwavering love for his family. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
