Obituary

Glenn C. "Lip" Lewis, 70, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2019 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2019 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to time of funeral service, and will resume after the service until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Kaskaskia College Foundation in memory of Glenn C. Lewis.

He was a retired highway construction worker and farmer in rural Mason. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham. Glenn was married to Tammy Lewis née Pierson, who passed away in 2010, and the two enjoyed their life in the woods with nature and their horses, dogs, and cats. Earlier, he had a son, Jared Lewis (Brooke Anderson) with Kathy Hecht. He was also previously married to Rebecca Pittman née Siegmund with whom he had a daughter, Jennifer Gaffney (Brian Gaffney). His grandchildren are Riley Gaffney and Charlotte and Lucy Anderson-Lewis. He is also survived by his brother, Jack (Sharon) Lewis and sister, Priscilla (Lester) Sipe.

Glenn's passion in life was playing music, particularly on trumpet or flugel horn. He was a gifted musician who cited "official lessons from a few individuals" including Everett Crane, Ted Black, and Doc Severinsen. He studied music at SIU Carbondale before forming the band Big Muddy and playing gigs throughout Chicago, Milwaukee, and New Orleans in the 1970s. More recently, he played with local groups including The Sounds of Swing, St. John's Brass, FACE Orchestra, Kaskaskia College Jazz and Concert Bands, The Blue Suede Crew, and Superbad. He played "Taps" for military funerals and Memorial Day celebrations, the Star Spangled Banner for Fourth of July celebrations, and about anything else people asked of him--and he did it with one-of-a-kind flair.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents William "Buck" Lewis and Aileen Lewis née Wenthe, wife Tammy Lewis, and brother and sister-in-law Bill and Connie Lewis née Childress.

He will be missed by family and friends, alike.
