George Charles Stumborg, 97 of Effingham, passed away at 4:10 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2015 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2015 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Monday morning at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. George was born August 11, 1917 in Effingham, the son of George and Anna (Koester) Stumborg. He enlisted with the United States Air Force on February 5, 1942. During WWII, he served in England, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy and South France. George was a signalman for the Army Corps and was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Doris M. Nacke on May 28, 1947 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham and she preceded him in death in 2009. George was an avid baseball fan who enjoyed cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, as well as having a love for all animals. He was a carpenter by trade and a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham.
George is survived by his two nieces, Mary Kulavic of Pawnee and Barb Zaccari of Effingham; five great-nieces and nephews and ten great-great nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris; two brothers, Edwin and Louie and two sisters, Hilda and Anna. George will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
