Obituary

George B. Habing, 75, of Teutopolis, died at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, February 18, 2012 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis with burial in St. Francis Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday evening at the church with a Knights of Columbus and parish rosary held at 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Crossroads Cancer Center or Catholic Charities.

George was born March 9, 1936 in Teutopolis, the son of Joseph and Kathleen (Sharp) Habing. After high school, George attended Quincy College and later graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He was a licensed funeral director and partner of the former Habing Funeral Home in Teutopolis until December of 1975. Mr. Habing was also former co-owner of B.G. Habing Furniture and Floor Covering in Teutopolis. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis, the Holy Name Society, Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2874, Teutopolis American Legion Post #924 and former assistant fire chief for the Teutopolis Fire Protection District. George served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married Joyce Hakman on December 26, 1959 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2009. George is survived by his wife; seven sons, Jerry (Cheryl) of Effingham, Dan (Kathy) of Teutopolis, David (Maureen) of Teutopolis, Dean (Larissa) of Highland, Andy (Jennifer) of Teutopolis, Hank (Tori) of Green Creek, Stan (Julie) of Bishop Creek; four daughters, Jeannie (David) Hess of Rockford, Kathy (Randy) Jones of Effingham, Sara (Steve) Roepke of Altamont and Loretta (Aaron) Zane of Greenup; 30 grandchildren; brother, Dennis (Cel) of Teutopolis; two sisters, Sara (Alvin) Hammes of Seneca, KS and Lucy Hornbeck of Raytown, MO.

George was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and Patrick; three sisters, Kathleen Nolan, Mary Jane McGee and Joyce Berchtold.

George was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He never knew a stranger and treated everyone as his friend. He was an unassuming man who truly enjoyed the simple things in life. George loved spending time with his family and just sitting around the fire and visiting. He enjoyed planting his garden and cutting wood with his boys. He always helped those he could and taught his children the importance of honesty, generosity and hard work. He battled his disease with incredible dignity, never complaining and always accepting his plight. He touched so many lives and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
