Francis J. Wente, 90 of Teutopolis, passed away at 10:15 p.m. Monday, November 3, 2014 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lillyville with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday evening at the church. A parish wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m., followed by Knights of Columbus rosary and Fourth Degree ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Heartland Christian Village in Neoga or to the American Cancer Society. Bauer Funeral Home in Teutopolis is assisting the family with arrangements.
Francis was born September 29, 1924 in Lillyville, the son of Frank and Anna (Schneiderjan) Wente. He married Alma (Probst) in 1948 and she preceded him in death in 1968. In 1971, Francis married Pauletta E. (Goeckner) and she survives.
Francis was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lillyville and a church trustee for almost 20 years. He was a member of 3rd Order of St. Francis as well as serving on the Teutopolis Unit 50 School Board, holding offices of President and Secretary. Francis was a Sigel Equity Director and served on the Advisory Board for the Effingham Equity. He was a board member for Mid America Dairyman and Director for E.J. Water.
Francis was a charter member of the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus, joining when he was just 18 years old. He was a faithful member for 71 years and was involved in starting the bingo fundraiser, which he worked for 34 years. He joined the Fourth Degree in 1977 and was recently inducted into the Knights of Columbus Hall of Fame.
Francis enjoyed being a dairy and grain farmer and raising registered collies. He also enjoyed retirement by spending time with family members, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Francis also spent much time playing cards, gardening and reading.
Francis is survived by his wife, Pauletta of Teutopolis; three sons, Joe (Karen) of Teutopolis, Tim (Betty) and Dennis (Dana), both of Sigel; three daughters, Mary (Fred) Ungrund of Cincinnati, Ohio, Patricia Wente of Effingham and Joan (Mike) Buehnerkemper of Teutopolis; 7 in-laws, 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren also survive.
Francis was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alma; sons, Mark and Stephen; 5 brothers and 13 brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
