Eugene "Gene" Bartels of Watson, passed from this life into the loving arms of Jesus on Wednesday, December 5, 2018.

Eugene was born on November 8, 1954 in Chicago, to parents Carl and Marietta (Cooley) Bartels (both deceased). Eugene has six siblings Christine, Carl (deceased), Clarice (deceased), Edwina, Tim, and Mary Ann. Eugene leaves behind is wife of 45 years.  Eugene and Lois were best friends and partners.  Eugene's strength and stubbornness saw them through many trials and tribulations. Eugene's pride and joy were his beloved children Eugene Jr. , Patrick (Kelsey), Clarissa (Jack) and his grandchildren Aaron, Kalynn, Emma, and Jack IV.

Eugene was a private, humble man, never expecting praise or compliments.  Every task he put his hand to he did everything he could to make it turn out right.  Thirty- nine years at Unit 40 was proof of that.

Eugene loved Elvis. He loved slow dancing to Love Me Tender under a full moon with Lois.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening, December 14, 2018 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. We will have a time of remembrance at the conclusion of visitation where everyone is invited to share their memories of Gene. He hated dressing up; if you come to pay your respects, come casual.  His favorite color was red, wear it in his honor.
