Dorothy "Dot" Gardewine, 76 of Teutopolis, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Carle Hospital in Champaign.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 2020 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis with burial in St. Francis Cemetery. A CCW rosary will be held at 4:00 p.m., followed by the visitation until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the church. A parish wake service will be held at the conclusion of the visitation. Memorial donations may be given to the Teutopolis Education Foundation, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or to the donor's choice. Dorothy was born July 22, 1943 in Effingham, the daughter of Maurice and Paula (Woermann) Gardewine. She worked for 35 years at the Teutopolis Grade School as a Kindergarten Teacher's Aid until her retirement in 2003. Although she did not have children of her own, she was blessed to have her nieces and nephews, as well as countless students she considered as her own. Dorothy was a life-long member of St. Francis Church in Teutopolis and was a member of the CCW.
Dorothy is survived by her siblings, Carol R. Hoelscher of Teutopolis, Louise (Dan) Eden of Nashville, TN and Francis "Fran" (Gin) Gardewine of Effingham; 17 nieces and nephews, 47 great-nieces and nephews and 26 great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Dennis; brother-in-law, Albert Hoelscher and sister-in-law, Paz Gardewine.
Dorothy's family would like to thank the doctors of Sara Bush Cancer Center and Hospital, University of Illinois - Chicago Hospital and Hematology Clinic and the Carle Foundation Hospital. She greatly appreciated all of the heartfelt prayers, cards and visits from family and friends during her illness.
