Obituary

Donald J. Schmidt, 64, of Dieterich, passed away at 3:42 p.m., Thursday, July 21, 2011 at his home with his family present.

Funeral services held at 10:30 a.m, Monday, July 25, 2011 at St. Isidore Parish at Bishop Creek in rural Dieterich. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday July 24, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. at the church, with a 6:30 p.m. parish wake service and 8:00 p.m Knights of Columbus rosary. Memorials may be made to St. Isidore Parish or to donor's choice.

Don was born on April 17, 1947 in Effingham, the son of Clarence and Matilda (Althoff) Schmidt. He married Clara Mae Pruemer on February 17, 1968.

Don attended Green Creek Grade School and was a 1965 graduate of Teutopolis High School. He then attended and graduated from the School of Electronics in Louisville, KY. He managed the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus for 25 years. Don then operated Don's Automotive Repair for 7 years. He was a member of St. Isidore Parish at Bishop Creek, the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2874 and the Fourth Degree. He also served as Grand Knight and received the Knights of Columbus Hall of Fame award in 2008. He was a Bishop Township trustee and also served on the zoning board. Don was an avid fastpitch softball player, playing for the Bishop, Funneman Construction, and Crystal Club teams over the years. Don also played in the Effingham Mens 35 and Over Softball League for several years. He was also a member of the Effingham Mens Bowling Assn. for many years and bowled with the Sandschafer Electric team.

Don is survived by his wife: Clara Mae of Dieterich; sons: Craig of Park Forest; Chris (wife Tina) and Brett (wife Kelly) both of Teutopolis and Todd (wife Kelly) of Dieterich; a daughter: Angie (husband Ted) Einhorn of Wheeler; his mother Matilda Schmidt of Effingham; 14 grandchildren: Aaron and Allison Einhorn; Braden, Kaci, Greta and Finn Schmidt; Briana, Abby and Chloe Schmidt; Jacob, Kendall, Derek, and Brody Schmidt; and Grayson Schmidt. also surviving are his sisters: Jean (husband Don) Klingler of Newton; Judy (husband Lloyd) Newberry and Joyce (husband Mark) Roedl both of Teutopolis. along with several nieces, nephews and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, a son, Bradley, and a brother-in-law Linus Drees.
