Dale Smith, 87 of Effingham, passed away Friday afternoon, April 20, 2018 at Effingham Rehabilitation and HealthCare Center.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service, Saturday morning at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the donor's choice.
Dale was born November 14, 1930 in Georgetown, the son of John Riley and Hyla (Owens) Smith. He served with the United States Navy and played on the All Navy Team, and went to Quincy College, and then later received his bachelors degree from the University of Illinois, where he played football. Dale worked at Beecher City High school as a coach and teacher, as well being at Sherwin Williams for 14 years. Dale owned Hickory Grove campground at Lake Sara with his then wife, Joan (Shouse) Smith, for 15 years. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham.
Dale is survived by his children, Dawn (Mike) Fuelle of St. Joseph, Amy (Randy) Donsbach of Effingham and Sean Riley (Melinda) Smith of Denver, CO; brother, Danny (Joan) Smith of Savannah, GA; grandchildren, Mark Fuelle, Tabitha (Jeff) Burnett, Samuel Donsbach, Joanna Smith and Ryan Smith; great-grandsons, Quinten and Bronson and Dale's friend, Barb Nelson.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dwight, Dean and Don.
