Obituary

Charles W. "Charlie" Harris, 93 of Effingham, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2020 at HSHS St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

A private funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery with military graveside rites. Memorial donations may be given to St. Anthony Church or St. Anthony Grade School.

Charlie was born December 31, 1926 in Dieterich, the son of Ronald and Nora (Harmon) Harris. He married Gertrude Anne Osthoff on November 26, 1945 at the St. Anthony Rectory. Charlie served with the United States Army during World War II and was a life member of the Effingham VFW and American Legion. Charlie was an employee of the United States Postal Service for 40 years as a rural mail carrier and was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. He and Gertrude both were avid dancers, driving many a mile to have a good time on the dance floor.  Country drives going nowhere in particular was also a favorite past time.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 75 years, Gertrude of Effingham; children, Ronald (Sherrill) of Effingham, Alan (Sharon) of Effingham, Bob (Becky) of Altamont, Linda (Tom) Ash of Cerro Gordo and Joe (Renee) of Glendora, CA; grandchildren, Christy (John) Dietzen, Donna (Shawn) Fitzgerrald, Michael (Brenda) Harris, Cory (Susan) Harris, Shannon Harris, Chelsea Harris, Nicole (Ryan) Gibbons, Megan (Travis) Tanner, Libby (John) Wilhelm, Angela, Neal and Nelson Harris; 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Virgil and Eldon Harris; sister, Maxine; grandchildren, Francesca Harris and Jay Ash.
