Carol Jean Vahling, 82 of Effingham, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023 at her son's residence in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, December 15, 2023 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am to service time, Friday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.

Carol was born on July 29, 1941, the daughter of Louis and Florence (Ruholl) Bushur. She married Herman Hartke on August 10, 1963, and he preceded her in death on September 18, 2001. She then married Louis Vahling October 4, 2003 who preceded her in death on September 5, 2014.

Carol enjoyed playing cards, watching mass online, and playing bingo.

Carol is survived by her sons, David (Malinda) Hartke of Bishop and Alan (Mindy) Hartke of Newton; grandchildren, Cole Hartke, Damien Hartke, Cassandra Hartke, Katherine Hartke, and Kenneth Hartke; and siblings, Kenneth (Lucy) Bushur, Dennis (Kathy) Bushur, Bert (Kenny) Walls, Sharon Fulk, and Roger (Pauletta) Bushur.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Herman Hartke and Louis Vahling; and sister, Marlene Greuel and brothers-in-law, Ronnie Greuel and Donald L. Fulk.
