Obituary

Bernice M. Gaddis, 90 of Teutopolis, passed away at 10:35 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with a 6:30 p.m. rosary. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Church or to the donor's choice. Bernice was born January 2, 1925 in Effingham, the daughter of John and Margaret (Swingler) Kinkelaar. She married Phillip D. Gaddis on June 22, 1949 in Teutopolis and he preceded her in death in 1984.

Bernice was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis and St. Francis Council of Catholic Women. She was one of the first adorers at the Adoration Chapel at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital and enjoyed delivering "Meals on Wheels". Bernice was a truly devout Catholic who loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She enjoyed the times she was able to share with family and friends, with Christmas always being a very special time for her to celebrate the Lord with her family. Bernice enjoyed playing bingo, as well as making and giving afghans to her great-grandchildren and friends. Bernice also enjoyed her bus rides with her friends to the river.

Bernice is survived by her two sons, Mike (Cindy) Gaddis of Teutopolis and Pat (Vicki) Gaddis of Effingham; daughter, JoEllen (Bill) Zerrusen of Teutopolis; sister, Sally (Kenneth) Weber of Teutopolis; son-in-law, Ed Pickens of Dieterich; 16 grandchildren, Craig (Kelly) Gaddis, Troy (Sheri) Gaddis, Derrick (Jeannie) Gaddis, Jeremy Deters, Kelsey and Whitney Gaddis, Breann (Curtis) Ladendorf, Brent (Jamee) Gaddis, Brian Gaddis, Matthew Zerrusen, Neil (Noelle) Zerrusen, Michele (Sam) Niebrugge, Maci (Derek) Meinhart and Chad Zerrusen; 14 great-grandchildren also survive.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Michael; daughter, Diane Pickens; three brothers, Peter, Walter and Adolph Kinkelaar; two sisters, Sophie Kinkelaar and Agnes Bierman.
