Obituary

Agnes Reiss, 99, of Effingham entered into eternal life at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Effingham, surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. combined Council of Catholic Women and Catholic Daughters of America rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service at Bauer Funeral Home, Effingham. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Grade School.

Mrs. Reiss was born Jan. 20, 1911, in Effingham, the daughter of John and Louise (Haag) Steinke. She graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1929. She married Leo H. Reiss in St. Anthony Church on Aug. 31, 1937. He preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 2004. They enjoyed 67 years of married life.

Agnes was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where she and Leo attended daily mass for many years, a member of St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women, the Catholic Daughters of America Court Columbus 720 and a member of the St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She retired with a 2,000-hour pin.

Agnes retired from Illinois Bell Telephone Co. with more than 23 years of service in December 1966. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed weeding in her flower and vegetable beds. She was an excellent cook, using produce from her garden to make canned goods and the best pies, rolls and soups for family and friends. Agnes was a skilled seamstress and especially enjoyed knitting afghans and baby items for her children and grandchildren.

She was an excellent babysitter for her grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to spend time with her family and friends.

In her passing, she is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane (Dick) Day of Effingham; son, John (Darlene) Reiss of San Jose, Calif.; grandchildren, Terri (Dave) Gilbert, Tim (Julie) Stephens, Tony (Laura) Stephens and Tisha Heaton, all of Effingham, Christine (Patrick) Brown and Janel (Robert) Pabon, all of Sacramento, Calif.; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
