James F. “General” Koester, 80, passed away at 9:20 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2014 at his home in Teutopolis.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 10, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis with burial in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at the church with a 6:45 p.m. parish prayer service, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary and Fourth Degree services. Jim was born April 1, 1934 in Effingham, the son of Anthony and Clara (Having) Koester. He married Janet M. Pals on November 26, 1955 and she survives. Jim was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis and president of the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2874, where he served as past Deputy Grand Knight and Fourth Degree faithful navigator. Jim was a retired farmer, as well as member of Effingham County Farm Bureau and was the Effingham Men’s Bowling Association Sportsman of the Year recipient for 2007-2008.
Jim is survived by his wife, Janet of Teutopolis; three sons, Randy (Debbie), Wayne (Diana) and Gene (friend, Nikki), all of Teutopolis; four daughters, Sharon (Steve) Miller and Vicki (Pat) Brumleve, both of Teutopolis, Lora (Steve) Westendorf of Dieterich and Pam (Lyle) Westfall of Watson; brother, Donald Koester of Effingham and sister, Florence Michels of Wheeler; 15 grandchildren, Lindsay Miller, Danielle Miller Nichols, Courtney Miller, Julie Brumleve Skilondz, Derek Brumleve, Kim Koester Wright, Kenny Koester, Kyle Koester, Jamie Koester Tucker, Devin Koester, Kelsey Westendorf Kowalczyk, Halie Westendorf Brummer, Emily Westfall, Cory Westfall and Brandon Koester; 10 great-grandchildren, Brytin, Braxton, Sadie, Allie, Logan, Ava, Kase, Kyla, Anara and Gavin.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, Phil; five brothers, Ralph, Ray, Norbert, Walt and Robert; two sisters, Marge Lindsay and Sidona Lau.
